Documenting Krump: Tha Last HOUR

If you're from New York and you Krump then you obviously herd of Hour, but if you still haven't, then read this post because Hour is an OG. Hour began his Krump journey back in 2007 when his mother introduced it to him at a family party after he was done showing off his dance skills and getting hyped-up from family and friends.

"I always loved the hype and energy I received at parties," He told me.

The first time he saw Krump was when he watched the movie Rize, the most popular KRUMP film. At the beginning of the film, there was disclaimer that read "none of the movements are sped up," however, Hour didn't think anything of it until he actually saw how fast they were moving and immediately became amazed. In one part of the movie, there was a Krumper that was wearing a white t-shirt and a fitted (basic Krump fashion), who grooved a lot in this movements. This guy caught Hour's eye after his mother mentioned that she can see him moving that way. At first, he doubted that he could learn how to Krump but he kept what his mother told him in his mind. Part of the doubt stemmed from the fact that all the Krumpers he saw that he liked in Rize were all slim.

"I thought I was too big to Krump," Hour told me.

Still, he continued to dance at parties but this time he would try to mimic what he saw in Rize along with his friend Miguel. One day at a house party, one of Hours' friends saw him "Krumping" and told Hour that he was training with a real Krumper and would like for Hour to meet him. Hour agreed to meet this teacher and later was introduced to Denver aka Destroyer, another east coast OG.

Soon Hour began training under Destroyer. Originally, it was him and group of his dance friends but the numbers began to dwindle after a while until it was just Hour and Miguel left. Hour eventually became one of Denver's "little homie," or crew mate, under the rank of B-dash Savage. Savage was another aka that Denver used. As part of his training, Denver asked him to watch some Krump videos of the veterans in the movement and that's when he learned about Solow, a big sized Krumper who is one of the best to ever do it [Solow is still one of my favorite Krumpers today].

"I don't understand how he can be that big and move in that way!" Hour told me.

He also learned about other big size Krumpers, like Syco, who is also a Vet.

[--Describing His aka's --]

The Last Hour is Hour's full dance name. The name was inspired by biblical scriptures, his way of life and given to him by Destroyer. In the biblical context, no man knows the time when God is to return to earth but Christians are charged to continuously prepare for his return. This is also known as the second coming of Christ. Like the many other Christians, that's exactly what Hour wanted to do, constantly prepare for that faithful day.

His other approach to his name is more practical reason. Since Hour is a drummer, he would constantly take up last minute gigs. He is also known to be reliable so his friends and family would ask him for last minute favors.

For his dance character as Hour he thinks of himself as a teacher who is somewhat a jerk. For example, if his opponent in a dance battle is off beat, Hour uses his knowledge of music (drumming) to teach him better rhythm while taunting him.

"Here, let me teach you how to dance to a beat that should be so simple," is something the Hour character would say.

[B]X, initials for the Bronx, is another aka of his and where he is from. The [B] is in brackets because it points to a group he was originally a part of called the [B]lock. This group was created Miguel who was Hour's neighbor. The [B]X character is based around Stoop kid from Hey Arnold. Like Stoop kid, Hour has been bullied. He would often be teased over his weight but would never stand up for himself. In one episode, Stoop kid was being teased for never leaving his house, however, this day was different because he decided that he will no longer be a victim and he chased out his bully! This is the story of [B]X.

East Hype is a third aka that he uses. The character for this name is not as story driven as the others. In this character, it's more of a dance-as-I-feel type attitude. That is the reason why Hour doesn't teach this side of his character because it's too personalized to the individual.

JR. SDOT (ranked name under Solow aka SDOT) is based off the movie A Man Apart. The mindset of this crew is that you only have one bullet left in the chamber to use to defeat your opponent. The SDOTs are the first line of defense in Solows' crew.

[--Hour's Favorite Krumpers, his Lab and Little Homies--]

When I asked Hour who were his favorite Krumper, I thought he would list about 5-10... he gave me almost 20! For most of the dancers, he listed the reasons why they made is top list, but to keep this post from becoming a scroll, I will simply list who they are in no particular order: Brui5er, Truck, Proof, Cremz, Solow, Mijo, Konkrete, Dreamz, Fable, Conflict, 08, Illared, Jungle, Tam, Jslaught, Fern, Princess Confident, Conflict.

After he listed his top favorites, we talked about his lab and how he breaks his down. He starts from the bottom half of his body; footwork, stomps, balance positions, etc. He then focuses on what he feels he lacks. He will always work on timing, rhythm and grooves. Because he feels many new Krumpers lack these basics, he will also develop them as battle tactics.

As far as his standards for lil homies goes, it's simple, someone like-minded to Hour. He expects his crew mates to be ready and willing to learn, however, still keep their own originality, creativity and style.

HOUR vs BROOD (NY OG)

This was my second time battling him, but it was my 1st win on camera.

HOUR vs POKE (NYC OG).

"Around this time I started to get a little cocky and ahead of myself. This was the first time I heard God speak to me and he distinctly said “don’t forget why you said you do this dance.” And he put the song “Everything – Tye Tribette” on my heart to play before my battle. The day before my battle. After this battle people started respecting my krump more and I became more humble." - Hour

State vs State 2 Clip

"I was taking people out left & right. And gained more respect in my city." -Hour

"The first time I battled Matrix. This clip was when I say my style was really formed. I was starting to control my grooves more & getting into character as well." -Hour

Personal Battle vs NYNE

"The night before I left to Texas my big homie (Solow) calls me and says “Yo, we making some changes in the fam, so imma make you Jr.” I instantly started cheesing and he says “You were always Jr but I just had to make you work for it first.” That sticks with me til this day. So this was my first battle as Jr and I was like I'm not losing my first battle as Jr. Also somebody named Jest, who I was beefing with at the time, was watching so I was also sending out a message." - Hour

"Rumble City 3: my original opponent didn't show so I’m thinking I was gonna battle JFlesh but he didn't showed up either. And I ask Spears to set me to battle and he sets me up with Rock. I got so mad because he’s not Jr Flesh or the other dude and I was mad because I was set up with low-tier dude and I wanted battle someone who was high-tier. It was one round." -Hour
