On a hot Saturday afternoon, I decided to take the bus to downtown, then bike about 15 minutes to personally meet the founder of Support Is Key [S.I.K] clothing brand, Joey Cash.
I first learned about S.I.K after I asked a good friend if he knew any local artists with a clothing brand. Although he did not, he saw one [Joey Cash] earlier on the local news channel giving away free backpacks and school supplies. As an individual who finds serving ones community important, I was inspired. I would later learn that giving out free backpacks was not the only type of philanthropy S.I.K has done. Joey Cash has also given away free clothing to students and his community for many years. He’s also hosted and sponsored block parties for the youth in Pawtucket.
The day I went to meet Joey Cash, I didn’t know what to expect. But, I knew that I wanted to learn more about his engagement in his community work and I, of course, wanted to share some of my own designs. The moment I walked into the store, I let him know the purpose of my visit and to no surprise, he was extremely welcoming.
Joey was a raised the inner city. Having lived in the city, he’s faced the many hardships inner city kids usually face; poverty, low performing, underfunded schools, no mentor ship, etc. For income back then, he began to sell on the streets and eventually got into trouble with the law. After facing the consequences, he knew that the path he was on was not a viable one, so he decided to switch up his lifestyle and instead inspire others like him towards a better path.
--- A local news story of Joey Cash's clothing store, and school give away ---
We introduced ourselves and talked for hours about how we envisioned ourselves helping out those in need. One of his goals was to partner up with breast cancers organization to help fundraise and donate money. I, on the other hand, just wanted to get my t-shits in a store, sell them and begin raising money for underfunded college students again. Joey helped me reach this goal by allowing me to sell from his store! [stock coming soon!]
Joey Cash is a multi-talented dude. In addition to running his brand and community work, he’s also a rapper. A quick name search on YouTube would take you to his videos with thousands of views. He’s worked with some of hottest local hip-hop artists in Rhode Island and has performed in many events!
